Gua Sha 101: Everything You Need to Know

Feb 20 2025Olivia Bennett2 min read

Gua sha has been practised in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries, and its translation to modern skincare is more than trend: it works. Used correctly on the face, it promotes lymphatic drainage, reduces puffiness, improves circulation, and over time contributes to a measurably more contoured, radiant complexion.

Choosing your tool is the first decision. Rose quartz retains cool temperatures and feels particularly pleasant on inflamed or sensitive skin. Bian stone, the material used in traditional practice, is believed to have the widest therapeutic range. Jade is the classic choice — beautiful, substantial, and perfectly weighted for a face massage. All three work; the best one is the one you will actually use.

Gua sha is not a shortcut. It is a relationship — with your face, with your hands, and with a few minutes of stillness each day.

Always apply a generous layer of facial oil or serum before you begin. The tool must glide — any dragging on dry skin is counterproductive and can cause irritation. Hold the tool at a 15-degree angle against the skin (almost flat), never perpendicular. Use light to medium pressure and long, upward strokes — always working against gravity and toward lymph node clusters at the neck and collarbone.

Consistency over intensity is the rule. Five minutes of gua sha three to four times a week will produce more visible results than an aggressive twenty-minute session once. Morning practice reduces overnight puffiness dramatically. Evening practice helps relax jaw tension accumulated throughout the day. Both are correct — it depends on what your skin and your schedule need.
