The Ultimate Guide to SPF: Why Sunscreen Is Non-Negotiable
Apr 2 2025Olivia Bennett1 min read
If you could only add one step to your skincare routine, every dermatologist on earth would tell you the same thing: wear sunscreen. Not occasionally. Not only at the beach. Every single day — before a window seat on a flight, before a coffee run, before sitting in a sun-facing office.
UVA rays — the ones responsible for premature ageing, pigmentation, and deeper structural damage — penetrate through glass and cloud cover with barely diminished intensity. SPF numbers only refer to UVB protection. This is why broad-spectrum formulas that specifically list UVA coverage (PA+++ rating in Asian markets, or "broad-spectrum" in the West) are the only SPFs worth using.
Retinol undoes yesterday's damage. SPF prevents tomorrow's. Of the two, prevention is the one you cannot afford to skip.
Application quantity is where most people inadvertently underprotect themselves. The SPF rating on a product is tested at 2mg per cm² of skin — far more than the average person applies. A practical rule: use about a quarter teaspoon for your face and neck alone, and reapply every two hours of direct sun exposure.
The texture revolution in SPF has been extraordinary. Modern mineral and hybrid formulas are lightweight, leave no white cast, and layer invisibly under makeup. If you have avoided SPF because of heavy, greasy formulas of the past, it is worth exploring the current generation — the barrier to daily use has never been lower.
