How to Keep Your Hair Hydrated All Season Long

Seasonal changes — drier air in autumn and winter, UV exposure and chlorine in summer — stress the hair shaft in fundamentally different ways. But the solution is the same year-round: a hydration strategy that works from inside the strand outward, not just at the surface.
Shampoo frequency is often the first thing to reassess. Over-washing strips the scalp of sebum, which is your hair's natural conditioner. For most hair types, washing every two to three days — or adopting a co-washing routine on alternate days — dramatically reduces moisture loss and breakage.
Hydrated hair is not a hair type — it is the result of a deliberate, consistent relationship between your routine and your strands.
The order of products matters more than the products themselves. Apply leave-in conditioner to towel-dried (not dripping wet) hair: this is the sweet spot where the cuticle is open enough to accept moisture but not so waterlogged that it dilutes the product. Lock hydration in with a lightweight oil or cream, concentrating on the mid-lengths and ends.
Weekly masking is a ritual worth protecting. A deeply nourishing hair mask left on for fifteen to twenty minutes under a warm towel does what daily conditioner cannot — it saturates the cortex of the strand, not just the cuticle surface. Look for masks with ceramides, panthenol, or protein to match what your hair is actively missing.
